Cutting the Cord

I've found it to be an untruth when people say, "Your kids are grown now because they are in college, and you should have less to do and a lot more time on your hands. You can do more for yourself." Well, this statement is far from the truth.

When you've raised your kids to be involved, work hard and to follow their dreams their departure to college simply takes you to another set of circumstances and responsibilities making "Cutting the Cord" a more challenging thing to do.

My kids have been what I call - my "Road Dogs" for 20 years. We traveled together, shared in their activities together, experienced their accomplishments and failures together we have been inseparable. So, cutting the cord if you will, has not been an easy task. Just like you must program yourself to be selfless when becoming a mother, you have to re-program yourself to allow them to grow.

You have to re-program yourself to back away. When you've learned to take care of the children first, making sure you adjust to their schedules ensuring they make it to their games, dance rehearsals, leadership and academic meetings as well as community service activities, learning how to withdraw and guide less is simply NOT easy!

I found myself worrying more as I tried to "Cut the Cord" because they weren't with me as much anymore. I no longer had control to be there to protect them. I had to get on my knees and pray. I asked God for his covering over my babies. I began to let them grow and make their own decisions with me and their daddy guiding along the way. I began to help less, I began to go to the rescue less, man and it's been difficult!

However, if you've raised them with God at the center of your family, and poured lots of love into them, disciplined them when they've earned it, and praised them when they've made accomplishments, backing away gets easier. When you can find peace that you raised them with those things and to follow your their dreams "Cutting the Cord" becomes a bit easier.
